The route skirts between the Hotlum and Bolum glaciers from a more remote base camp and involves somewhat steeper and slightly more technical climbing than the Avalanche Gulch route. As a result, we run this climb at a lower guide to guest ratio of one guide to three guests. In our 3 day Shasta North side climb we leave out of a North side trail head to establish a quiet base camp at the base of the route. The views and the wilderness solitude are breathtaking. On day two we will cover all the basic mountaineering skills and introduce some more intermediate skills such as: Ice axe and crampon use Ice axe self arrest Snow climbing and alpine ice climbing technique Rope travel using snow anchors and belaying Day three is the big push to the summit with an early alpine start. We then quickly cross into French-speaking Switzerland. After hiking through the town of Verbier, we make our way high into the Swiss alps and begin using the high mountain hut system. We make our way across an easy glacier crossing and eventually end up in the small Swiss village of Arolla and then through high mountain passes into German-speaking Switzerland. The last leg takes us through more small villages and into the Visp Valley where we eventually arrive in the car free town of Zermatt under the shadow of the iconic Matterhorn. Then we travel to the beautiful slopes of La Malinche, where we begin our acclimating in comfortable cabins at a resort located right at the trailhead (10,000 ft). From here we climb La Malinche (14,600 ft) and are rewarded with striking views of our next climbing objectives: Ixtaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba. Then it's on to Ixtaccihautl. After an acclimating hike to 14,800 ft, we move to the Altzomoni climbers lodge at 13,000 ft to continue our acclimatization. The next day, we’ll climb ‘Ixta’ via the ‘knees’ route and catch spectacular views of the active volcano Popcatepetl. The next two days are dedicated to rest in the cosmopolitan colonial city of Puebla where we spend time exploring the traditional Mexican markets as well as sampling some of the finest cuisine Mexico has to offer. Not only is the extra day a fascinating exploration of the heart of Mexican culture, it is a needed recovery for your body at a lower altitude. Our acclimating complete, we journey to the base of Pico de Orizaba where we take an exciting 4WD trip to our camp. The views are spectacular as the central Mexico plain spreads out 11,000 feet below the summit. Then it's back to Puebla for a celebratory dinner. Using a boat as our base, we'll be able to reach destinations that can't be approached by a car. We'll sail in the fjords of the Arctic Circle and literally begin the ski tours from remote snow covered beaches. We'll climb summits with amazing views and then enjoy massive descents of untouched powder-snow - right back to the boat. We’ll have all the necessary elements to make a cozy home for the week including: central heating, personal cabins with double berths, hot showers, and en-suite toilets, as well as a combined kitchen/living area to relax in after skiing. With several hundred summits in the area, the Lyngen Alps is a skiers Mekka. You'll discover an endless variety of challenges, so you will always have a tour that fits your personal ambitions and level of fitness.
